“What is a graven image?”
I often imagine that fictional story telling has been around as long as deception has.
That led me to question the ancient texts and stories as well as the modern scholastic texts.
I encourage the readers to research ancient “Magic” as esoteric mystery schools, or as “science“.
There is a stark contrast of terminology whereas there is little distinction between magic to the unlearned and technology to the engineer.
Sir Arthur C. Clarke was a member of “the club” and he was reported as having said:
Engineering the path of civilization is known to be an agenda by technocratic institutions and some specific secret societies of which Men such as Clarke, Charles Darwin, Copernicus, Newton, and most notable men who are most lauded in the established curriculum …
Think about the emotional trust placed “In God We Trust”, or “NASA” and “Science“.
Certainly, NASA’s “Blue Marble” images of “Earth” as a spinning-ball-planet, and like gods only NASA can provide photographs of the total Earth.
Consider similar trust in “Wall Street“, U.S. Dollar, etc…
The phrase, “graven image”, is a translation in the King James Version of Exodus 20:4 and in the second of the Ten Commandments.
The Hebrew word translated “graven image” [ פֶּ֫סֶל transliteration “pesel” ] means literally “an idol(ized) image.”
It could be a statue of a person or animal, or a relief carving in a wall or pole, and it is meant to be seen by everyone.
We find ancient carvings, etchings, statues, and today we see government buildings, corporate sponsored entertainment, and classroom textbooks having indoctrinating images to inspire belief or a form idolatry…
The progression of idolatry generally starts with the acknowledgement of a power, or great influence ….
Notice the deliberate placement of statues and images for stadiums, government buildings, sponsored entertainment…
The spiritual or consciousness capture can follow from such mass appeal and public acceptance.
Web Search: Asherah poles, Ba’als covered in gold leaf, and etchings of gods accompanying Egyptian hieroglyphics…

An interesting discussion! The Muslim religion has traditionally taken that prohibition against ‘graven images’ and representation of living things seriously – which probably motivated the iconoclastic movement in Byzantine times. As for me, I’m not averse to pictures of people or animals as such – just their use, as you say, for purposes of indoctrination. And I guess money, in this context, is the most powerful ‘graven image’ of all.
