Title: Greece: Tractors roll across Syntagma Square as farmers protest pension reforms
Video posted 12 Feb 2016
…
On Friday, some 800 angry Greek farmers marched on the Agriculture Ministry in Athens and beat police with Shepherd’s crooks.
No, really:
The farmers are understandably upset with Alexis Tsipras and the government for a proposal to triple the social security burden and double income taxes in an effort to appease the powers that be in Brussels who claim Greece has not made enough progress towards fiscal consolidation since the country’s third bailout was agreed last August.

Athens is Closed for “Farmers Day”
By Philip Chrysopoulos -Feb 12, 2016

All roads leading to central Athens are blocked by police forces who are checking vehicles in an effort to stop farmers from driving their tractors to Syntagma Square for the major protest rally set to take place on Friday afternoon.
Thousands of farmers are on their way to Athens in private cars and buses in order to participate in the major demonstration against security fund reforms in front of the Greek Parliament. At the same time, scheduled blockades continue in Greece’s main thoroughfares.
In Athens, all major avenues and roads leading to Syntagma Square are also blocked by police in order to facilitate protesters to reach the square on foot and keep vehicles away.
As a prelude to the Syntagma Square demonstration, Cretan farmers clashed with police in front of the headquarters of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food at around 10:30 am on Friday.
About 2,000 farmers from Crete had gathered outside the ministry. They tried to enter the building in order to give a petition, but police did not allow them access. Reportedly, the farmers responded by throwing rocks, flares and tomatoes at police and the ministry windows. Riot police responded using tear gas and stun grenades.
Four Cretan farmers were arrested during the clashes.
The thousands of farmers will be joined by thousands of professionals and workers who will demonstrate against security funds and tax reforms in front of parliament.
The farmers unions and the representatives of the 68 blockades have announced that they will camp at Syntagma Square for 48 hours demanding that the government withdraws the unpopular draft bills.
The first tents are already set up at the square, showing the determination of protesting farmers.

EU Says IMF is Part of the Review of Greece’s New Bailout Program
By C.J. Polychroniou -Feb 13, 2016
Asked about the article that IMF’s Poul Thomsen wrote the other day in connection with the IMF’s position on the new bailout program for Greece, European Commission vice president Valdis Dombrovskis said that the Fund is involved in the review of the new bailout program for Greece and that the European Union officials are working closely with the Fund.
Poul Thomsen, IMF’s representative for the bailouts of Greece, posted an article on the Fund’s blog yesterday titled “Greece: Toward a Workable Program,” in which he states clearly that the two preceding bailouts failed to produce a financially sustainable situation for Greece, and raises serious doubts about the prospect of the third bailout program if it does not include debt relief along with draconian reforms.
Thomsen also makes it clear in the aforementioned article that the unwillingness of the EU authorities to include debt relief in the new bailout program for Greece is the reason the IMF is not rushing to take part in it with financial assistance.
Still, European Commission vice president Valdis Dombrovskis expressed optimism that the IMF will participate fully in the new bailout program for Greece.
For the record, the official position of the EU authorities is that there is an agreement in place, signed last August, and that Greece must meet its terms and conditions. The issue of debt relief may be examined only after the completion of the review of the new bailout program.
